The Calgary Apartment Association 2001 Awards
Celebrating Excellence in the Residential
Apartment Industry
By Tanya Dion
On April 3, members of the Calgary Apartment Association (CAA) gathered at the Palliser Hotel to celebrate excellence in the apartment rental industry. Support for award recipients and for the CAA was evident by the shared enthusiasm of those in attendance as the recipients took the stage to receive honours from their peers in the industry. This year marks the second annual awards gala and the first to expand the celebration to include nine awards in six categories. The CAA is proud to acknowledge notable achievements of its members and of individuals who have demonstrated exceptional support of the organization with a strong commitment to ensuring that service to building owners, managers and tenants is the very best.
Members of the CAA for five years or more are eligible by nomination from their peers for the Lifetime Achievement Award. This year’s recipient is Sue Jackson. Sue has been instrumental in the development of the Crime Free Multi-Housing Program and education programs in addition to actively serving in various capacities on the Board of Directors and CAA committees during her eleven-year association with the organization.
The residential property management industry relies on the quality of service and products provided by suppliers in every sector of the industry and with The Gerry Lebsack Award salutes a Calgary-based individual or company who has served the industry with distinction. Bill Jeffray of Renfrew Thompson Insurance is the first recipient of this prestigious award. Bill is a model citizen with an outstanding track record in business and community development, including several years of volunteer service with youth groups, the education sector and arts communities.
The Safe City Award recognizes achievements of serving police officers who’s input to the CAA assists building owners and managers in developing and implementing safety measures. This year’s Safe City Award goes to Constable Peter Waring for his work with the Calgary Housing Authority to create safe environments for apartment residents.
An opportunity for building owners and managers to acknowledge that the success of their business operations begins with reliable, courteous and qualified service and product providers is presented with The Customer Service Award. Blinds 2000 Manufacturing Ltd. was selected, from an impressive list of nominees, as this year’s recipient.
Tenant Service Award 2001 goes to Amica at Terrace Gardens on Sixth. The people at Amica go above and beyond the call of duty to make tenants feel a welcome part of this vibrant apartment community.
Nominations for Building of the Year Awards are reviewed by a panel of industry peers who volunteer their time to visit each building and measure the nominees’ success within a set of pre-determined criteria.
Building of the Year (1 – 12 Units) is Tikka Holdings Ltd. Andy and Anita Tikanen are proud to set a precedent for excellence with their exceptional building at 1619 26 Avenue SW.
The Southmore at 615 57 Avenue SW, by O & Y Enterprises is Building of the Year (13 – 49 Units).
Kootenay Holdings Ltd. is the recipient of Building of the Year (50 – 100 Units) for Stanford Court, 1033 12 Avenue SW and
Boardwalk Equities Inc. for Building of the Year (101 + Units) at Spruce Ridge Estates, located at Spruce Drive and Hemlock Crescent SW.
While the CAA Awards acknowledge excellence from an extensive number of entrants, everyone associated with the organization is a winner. Members of the CAA strive to continually excel at meeting the needs of apartment residents in Calgary by responding to their concerns with determined effort to provide the best homes for a broad range of lifestyles.
Congratulations to all this year’s recipients and special thanks to the dedicated group of volunteers and sponsors who support the efforts of the CAA on behalf of Calgary’s residential apartment industry.
The excitement is just beginning for the CAA as plans for next year’s awards are already underway. Contact the CAA at 265-6055 for more information about nominations and awards criteria.
